The grass is lush and green and the perennial gardens have been established for more than 40 years. As with all things, time slips by and priorities shift. As my grandparents have gained “wisdom” (a polite ways of saying years), some of the outdoor tasks have become near impossible for them. With wilderness as our neighbors, we are in a unique position of constantly trying to re-gain the property line and keep the brambles and briars at bay, revitalize flower beds that get roosted in by fat wild turkeys, fend off jack rabbits that enjoy nibbling at the new tender growth. There is never a dull moment!

Fond memories from childhood were hanging out in the yard with the family, all of us working together, working the soil. For decades, we had a victory garden. We grew all kinds of veggies, and had and blueberry bushes, apple trees, a peach tree and a pear tree. There was also an herb garden and a rhubarb patch, wild blackberries and raspberries. Summer was a time for meals highlighting fresh fruits and veg and tons of time running around outside, enjoying each other’s company. Late summer was time for canning preserves and pickling the late cucumbers. Fall was a time to gather seeds, cover up the flower beds and plant bulbs, preparing for a new show of colors in spring.

The veggie garden patch has not been worked in probably a decade. This year will be different.
